Plot: Desert ants suddenly form a collective intelligence and begin to wage war on the desert inhabitants. It is up to two scientists and a stray girl they rescue from the ants to destroy them. But the ants have other ideas.

Review: Another one of those ambitious sci-fi films that really does pull it off. I was actually quite transfixed with the film through-out it – the music and ant pieces are great and tend to really pull you into the story of man vs ant.phase-iv

Apparently the film was tampered with in Post against the Director’s wishes (Saul Bass) so who knows what else could have happened if done his way.

Anyway, it’s war outside as conditions get worse and the ants starts to think and to attack – which is damn cool in my opinion. As I said the Ant shots are creepy but you soon get used to them and that sound they make when they’re near. The two Scientists and main actress Kendra (Lynne Frederick) play this slow artsy film out very well but it’s worth the effort even to watch it once.

The ant attacks really are spectacular as no-one can see what they’re doing until it strikes, the Sun bit for instance, but those weird towers that were built uneased me a bit because what if it did actually happen? We’d be screwed that’s what.

It really is a ‘new kind of film experience’ and always has me scratching my head through it, mainly out of tension and ever building ant colony outside.

Interesting note as well, his film was featured on one of the early episodes of Mystery Theatre 3000 and it is the only directed film of Title Designer Saul Bass.
